Main Scriptures:
Proverbs 3:5-6
James 4:7
1 Peter 5:6-10
Philippians 4:13
surrender (v): to agree to stop fighting, hiding, resisting
submission (v): the act of yielding to power or authority
Did you know that both surrender and submission require action? These aren't passive ideas — they’re active verbs that call us to "do" something. Though both words begin with an “s” and involve yielding, their meanings are distinct.
Surrender typically implies a complete giving up, often in a situation of conflict or struggle. It usually means letting go of control.
Submission, however, is a voluntary act — a conscious choice to yield to authority. It reflects an intentional decision to trust and obey.
I remember a time in my life when I was resistant to what God was asking of me.
Have you ever felt like you were running from something, even though deep down you knew that what you were avoiding would ultimately lead you to God’s best?
To receive God’s best, we must submit to His authority, His laws, His commandments, and His Word.
Proverbs 3:5-6, reminds us to:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight."
Submission is an act of alignment — it's choosing God, acknowledging that He has ultimate authority over our lives, our circumstances, and our future. But we can’t fully submit to God unless we’re first willing to surrender — to let go of our wants, desires, and thoughts.
Submission ends the power struggle.
Surrender removes us from it entirely and invites us into deeper relationship with God.
James 4:7 says:
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
This verse reminds us that following God is an active choice. We can either give in to temptation or resist it — and when we choose resistance, God promises the enemy will flee. God describes worldliness as a focus on material things, selfish desires, and temporary pleasures. Godliness, on the other hand, is about living for Him — valuing what He values, serving others, and striving for eternal life rather than temporary satisfaction.
Submission to God means surrendering control. It allows Him to show up in our lives in ways we never could have imagined. Think about it — have you ever fought so hard for something that God never planned for you to have? How many times do we end up hurt, needing to heal from situations God never intended us to walk through? Living for God means living a life of surrender.
1 Peter 5:6-10 encourages us:
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith... And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace... will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.”
When we release control, God strengthens us. He realigns our path and directs our steps toward His perfect plan.
Philippians 4:13 reminds us:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” But that strength comes only when we yield to His authority.
I remember this one guy many, many years ago and wondering why it didn’t work out. I tried to control the outcome, doing everything I could to make it work. But looking back, I now see that God never intended that relationship for me. Even though healing was painful, God showed me His love through the process. Still, I wonder — what if I had surrendered earlier? Could I have avoided that hurt?
Maybe you’ve moved somewhere God never wanted you to be, only to realize — after time, money, and struggle — that He had a better plan all along. That’s the beauty of surrender and submission: God lovingly redirects us, even when we go off course.
My prayer for you is this:That through your surrender and submission to God, you will discover a renewed strength — strength to walk in His will, pursue His purpose, and receive the fullness of what He has always intended for your life.
Prayer of Surrender and Submission to God
Heavenly Father,
I come before You with a heart that desires to be fully Yours. Today, I lay down my plans, my desires, and my understanding, and I surrender them all to You. I confess that too often I’ve tried to control my life, relying on my own strength and wisdom — but You alone are God, and You know what’s best for me.
Lord, I submit to Your authority. I choose to trust in Your Word, follow Your commandments, and walk in obedience to Your will. Teach me to listen for Your voice above all others, and give me the courage to follow even when I don’t understand the way.
I surrender my fears, my doubts, and my anxieties. I release the need to have it all figured out. I give You every area of my life — my relationships, my career, my future, my thoughts, my emotions, and my past. I place them all at Your feet. Father, break down every wall of pride, selfishness, and resistance in me. Replace it with a spirit of humility and faith. Lead me, Lord, and I will follow. Shape my heart to desire what You desire. Help me to walk in complete dependence on You. May Your will be done in my life — not mine. May Your plans take root and flourish, even when they look different than what I imagined.
Thank You for Your grace, Your patience, and Your love. I trust You completely, and I give myself fully to You.
In Jesus’ name I pray,
Amen
